Councillors predict a ‘world stage’ for Hednesford as Commonwealth Games head for Cannock Chase

Hednesford town councillors have welcomed the next Commonwealth Games as a chance to put the area on a world stage after Cannock Chase was named as the venue for mountain biking.

Competitive cyclists from around the world will compete in a cross country event in the summer of 2022 in the area of outstanding natural beauty which is already a well-established venue for high-profile tournaments.
Councillor George Adamson said: “This is such an honour that means, as a gateway to the Chase, Hednesford can be known internationally. This can only be good for the town.”
Hednesford Town Council chairman Alan Pearson added: “This is a great opportunity and very exciting for economic development.”
The games will take place in July and August with 17 different sports across Birmingham and the West Midlands with athletes from 71 countries.
More than a million tickets are set  to go on sale for the overall event in the run up to the games.
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands had also already welcomed the opportunity to highlight Cannock Chase.
He said: “This was always a regional bid, with many of the regional partners supporting financially. It’s therefore particularly pleasing that some of the events and competition will take place around the region, giving us the opportunity to showcase places like Cannock Chase and Leamington Spa to the world and ensure the benefits of what I am confident will be a fantastic event are shared out.”
