Biggest and best Hednesford switch-on as councillors secure lights funding
A record number of stallholders boosting local charities are set to take part in Hednesford’s Christmas lights switch-on celebrations after town councillors pledged to pay for the lights.
Cannock Chase Council withdrew funding for this year’s Christmas lights as part of money-saving measures and Hednesford town councillors have agreed to pick up the bill, which is expected to be around £2,000.
Council chairman Alan Pearson said it was impossible to say an exact figure as they were still counting the cost.
But he added: “The Christmas lights in Hednesford are a special part of our year and we did not want to see them end.”
Hednesford’s Christmas lights switch-on is from 4pm on Friday, December 1, with Market Street closed from 1pm to 8pm.
Councillor Pearson added:“We know how much people love to see the lights in the festive period and it was important they continued.” “This is very much a community event supported by many local organisations working together under the umbrella of Hednesford in Partnership”
Organisers of the switch-on say they’re very pleased with the level of interest from stallholders and community groups – with the biggest attendance, of around 60 stalls to date.
Shopkeepers can compete in an annual best dressed window competition and children have been taking part in colouring contest with a festive theme.
Councillor Pearson added: “Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. We are pleased to have been able to maintain the presence of the lights and to look forward to welcoming residents young and old to a fun night. We would also like to thank the many volunteers who take part to make the switch-on a success and supporting trade.”
