New talk brings Hednesford’s canal system to life

History buffs are invited to a talk about Hednesford’s forgotten canals at Pye Green Community Centre.

The presentation by Councillor Derek Davis will explain where the waterways were and what happened to them.
Councillor Davis has carried out extensive research and will reveal his findings to an audience at 7pm on Tuesday, September 5.
The current Cannock Extension Canal ran to Hednesford, and served a number of collieries along its route. It was first opened in 1863, and its northern section closed more than half a century ago because of mining subsidence.
Councillor Davis’ talk is part of a heritage series of presentations sponsored by Hednesford Town Council.
He said: “It has been fascinating to discover more about these important waterways and the vital role they played in our history. My talk covers a vibrant time and it has been a pleasure to document.
